Pheasant
What is commonly known today as a pheasant is a hybrid that resulted from crossbreeding between the English, Japanese, and Mongolian Chinese pheasant. Although the specific origin of the pheasant is contested, the ring-necked pheasant has a long history as a delicacy imported from Asia, namely China. Often called the Chinese pheasant, the ring necked pheasant gets its name from the white collar that surrounds the neck of the male. The Manchurian pheasant is a subspecies of the ring-necked pheasant. It is believed that the Manchurian Ring-neck pheasant's range originally stretched from South Korea to Siberia, Mongolia, and Manchuria, and then from the Sea of Japan west to inner Mongolia and the Mongolian Republic. Although originally from Asia, pheasant are now found in both Europe and North America.
A medium-sized game bird, regarded by some as a "noble fowl", the pheasant is perhaps the most elegant bird for fine dining meals. It is tender, succulent, with a mild flavor, and is sure to satisfy the most discriminating game bird connoisseur.
